The PEB-800-40 module is here!

Following the very recent launch of the B-Box 4, we are now thrilled to announce the release of the PEB-800-40 power module. This new module offers superior versatility, improved reliability, and still the same ease of use as its predecessors, the PEB8038 and PEB8024.

While looking similar to the previous generation, the PEB-800-40 features significant changes. It incorporates new power semiconductors, an entirely renewed gate-driving stage, smarter onboard logic, and a completely re-designed mechanical support for the cooling heatsink.

This single, highly versatile module, is designed to cover both high-current and fast-switching applications, superseding both the PEB8038 and PEB8024. “There is no application area where the new module doesn’t perform better than the previous ones” says Simon Strobl, product owner of the PEB-800-40.

Superior versatility and ease of use!

With power ratings that are only slightly superior to its predecessors, the PEB-800-40 shines differently. In fact, it brings few, but significant improvements that contribute to a greater versatility and ease of use. At the end of the day, this is what truly matters to enable rapid control prototyping applications.

Short-term overload capability

Instead of a fixed over-current threshold, the new module features I²t overcurrent protection. This allows short-term transients of up to 200% for up to 500 ms. In the end, this greatly improves the tolerance of the module (e.g. to control-related overshoots), and extends its range of application.

Smart protections

The onboard protection logic constantly monitors the operating point to dynamically enforce the Safe Operating Area (SOA) based on the operating point. This offers smarter protections that better account for the related physics. Hence, more current can be tolerated at low DC bus voltage or low switching frequency, thanks to lower losses. Additionally, the module can be better protected in case of unbalanced losses between the upper and lower switches.

±800VDC-capable design

Thanks to superior galvanic isolation, the new modules can be operated with a DC terminal permanently grounded without violating the regulatory isolation specifications. Similarly, stacked configurations reaching ±800VDC can also be officially supported. Ultimately, this means that the modules can be left floating or grounded, any configuration being just fine!

Improved onboard sensors

The new onboard sensors deliver greatly superior signal integrity in difficult operating conditions, such as under significant or fast common-mode voltage transients. Practically, this reduces the required understanding and implementation efforts, making filtering essentially unnecessary.

Auto-identification with the B-Box 4

When used with the B-Box 4, the new modules are automatically recognized by the controller. This non only permits detecting possible software misconfigurations (e.g. wrong ADC parameters), but also supports reading calibration data from the module. This way, repetitive calibration efforts can be completely alleviated.
